Product Marketing is a strange beast, existing in the realm where science meets art and vice-versa. On one hand it is difficult to qualify as an 'art' because of its scientific basis, but on the other hand marketers operate almost entirely based on instinct and intuition.

From an outside perspective, it is interesting to see how Marketing operates. In a way, marketing can be broken down into several distinct groups of thinkers and doers.

First you have the 'Gurus' who sit on high and generate ideas, which are passed down to the 'Artisans', where they are turned into concepts that can be built upon. Then these concepts are taken by actual people in the field and prototyped until a product is created that meets all expectations of what is desired.

The 'Artisans' are the people who take those concepts and build on them, sometimes blowing them out of proportion to turn a concept into an actual product that will be sold. Even in this stage there is back-and-forth between what they want and what they can create.

After the Artisans take a concept and make it into something they can sell, then Product Marketing takes over. The true goal of this group is to bridge the gap between what is desired and what is actually being sold.
