Things I learned at work

1. Trust is fundamental to a productive workforce

Transparency builds trust -- within teams, at companies and in our wider society.

Without trust, you reduce an employee to labor: the less you trust someone, the less work they'll do -- the less of themselves they'll put into their work.

2. Employees are your brand

I don't really care about the company, I really care about the people. I want to work with really talented people doing interesting and challenging problems, and I want to know that I can learn from my peers.

You can be the best employer in the world but if your people don't love your brand -- they won't want to work for you.

3. Super heroes are necessary

The importance of being yourself in the workplace.

Don't care what the internet thinks of you -- just be your awesome self.

Why? Because when a company hires below board it becomes hard to trust the brands they're trying to sell, hence why Volkswagen suffered a loss in sales after their emissions scandal.

Strangers know more than you do about your customers.

4. Ignore the naysayers

The flexible work schedule, remote work, working from home -- those are all popular topics right now but two years ago they were anathema, I didn't realize how much I really needed to be there all the time.

Now she highly encourages remote work for Yahoo employees, so long as they still put in the hours and accomplish what they need to do.

5. It's Okay to bully yourself

Most people don't like to put themselves first -- that's how you win. If you put yourself first, says it like it was, you have better relationships, get extraordinary results.

"If you're here to win, you're going to bully yourself -- you're going to put yourself first."

6. Be generous with your time

I sometimes send emails to friends and loved ones asking 'How can I support you?'.

It's a gentle way to stay in touch with people without having to put pressure on yourself to organize a meet-up or call.

Connect more. The network is the key to career success. Don't miss out on the opportunity.

7. A good mentor is invaluable

A great mentor is worth just as much as a great co-founder, which I agreed with.

The mentor is your guide, your Yoda.

Their perspective about the world is really, really important in shaping who you are.

8. Stay curious. Don't stay a 'yes' man

I can't say I love working -- part of me loves it, part of me hates it. There have definitely been days in my career when I haven't felt like showing up. But every time I end up remembering that in order to make a living I have to keep working forever.

I'm no longer someone's bestie. I'm here for my own good. If I feel uncomfortable I'm sticking up for myself. I've been a yes man my whole life and I don't think it's served me very well.

9. Befriend your arch nemesis

Not too long ago I was told I was worthless and would never amount to anything. I would never lead a group, never speak, never sell anything.

Even though you doubt yourself, you owe it to yourself to be great. You owe it to yourself to be better today than you were yesterday.

10. Be kind to yourself

Be kind to others.
