There is something that happens to the human mind when it has access to large numbers. We humans seem to have a limit on how much of reality we can actually perceive and understand at any one time, so in order for us humans not to die from intellectual collapse we must keep our minds small by only allowing ourselves access to a limited amount of information at any given time.
And this is where advertising comes into the picture. Advertising doesn't actually directly change your mind, but it influences you by affecting that limit on how much of reality we humans can perceive and understand at any given time.
For instance, if you see a product advertised on the television and in magazines, then that brand will be one of the few things your mind is capable of holding onto at any given time.
So, you may have a lot of different thoughts about many different things, but if there is one brand that keeps popping into your mind at any given time - especially when trying to relax and think abstractly or creatively - then that brand has become the main thing in your mind. And it will influence not only how you make decisions regarding spending money on products, but also how you make other decisions as well, simply because it is so present in your mind.
There are many different ways to influence people in this way. For instance, advertising itself can be seen as a distraction or an attention-grabber, but it is more than that. Advertising is also about how you use your mind when watching television and reading magazines.
The human mind is not a blank slate, and the most important thing for any advertiser to know about your mind is that it has been trained by your environment.
